Most web hosting advice skips the first real decision. Before you compare storage, bandwidth or price, you have to pick a platform — and if you get that wrong, nothing else you choose will save the project.
The good news: the answer is usually obvious once you know what to look at. Here's how to tell, what website hosting actually costs in India, and the two things worth checking before you pay anyone.
The question that decides it
Forget the marketing. Only one thing matters: what is your site built with?

That's genuinely the whole decision. Your visitors never know which platform you're on, and it makes no difference to how your site looks or ranks.
One nuance worth knowing: modern .NET (formerly .NET Core) is cross-platform and will run happily on Linux. So if you're building something new in .NET 8 or later with a MySQL or PostgreSQL backend, either platform works. But the moment MSSQL Server, classic ASP or IIS-specific configuration enters the picture, Windows hosting is the straightforward answer rather than a fight.
Two myths worth clearing up
"Windows hosting is slower." It was, a decade ago. On a current stack — AMD EPYC processors, DDR5 memory, NVMe storage — the platform isn't your bottleneck. Your application code and your database queries are.
"You need a Windows PC to use Windows hosting." No. You manage it from a browser, on any device. The operating system on the server has nothing to do with the one on your desk.
What web hosting costs in India — and the renewal trap
This is where most buyers lose money, and it's entirely avoidable.
Look closely at any cheap hosting offer and you'll usually find two prices: the promotional rate and the regular rate. One well-known Indian provider advertises ₹79 a month against a regular price of ₹159 — but only if you pay four years upfront.
So the question isn't "what does this cost?" It's:
- What's the renewal price, in writing?
- How long must I commit to get the advertised rate?
- Does the price change after the first term?
Compare year-two cost rather than the headline, and the cheapest plan frequently stops being cheapest. We renew at the listed price — no promotional rate that triples on you at month thirteen.
What "unmetered" actually means
No provider gives you genuinely unlimited anything. What you get is a fair usage policy, and the real limits live inside it.
The two that catch people out on shared hosting:
Inode limits. An inode is roughly one file. A moderately-sized site with a media library can hold 100,000+ files without trying. Many "unlimited storage" plans cap inodes, and when you hit the ceiling, backups usually stop working before anything visible breaks.
Concurrent process limits. This is the actual throttle on shared hosting — how many visitors you can serve simultaneously, regardless of how much "unmetered bandwidth" you were sold.
None of this is dishonest; it's how shared hosting works. But ask for the numbers before you buy, not after.
Does your host actually own its servers?
Here's something almost nobody asks.
A large share of companies selling webhosting services in India own no infrastructure. They rent servers abroad, add a reseller panel and their branding on top. It's a legitimate model, but it has a consequence: when hardware fails, your provider files a ticket and waits — exactly like you would.
If the IP belongs to a large overseas infrastructure company rather than the brand you're paying, you're buying from a reseller.
